Domestication
Domestication is the process of brining Wild species under human management. The present day cultivated plants have been derived from wild weedy species. Therefore, the 1st step of development cultivated plant was their domestication.
The great difference between cultivated plant and their wild relatives brought about by selection of human as well as nature. Domestication of wild species is still being done because wild species has great significant and useful for Human existence.
- microorganism producing antibiotic Involved in nitrogen fixation and producing other compounds of Industrial or medicinal products.
- Forest free producing timber and other commercial products fulfilling specific needs.
- Euphorbiaceae produce latex and this latex is used for the extraction of petroleum products.
- Simmondsia spp produces seeds containing oil and this oil is used as industrial lubricants.
Change in plant species under Domestication :
~ Elimination of reduction of shattering of pods/ spikes.
~Elimination of Dormancy.
~Decrease in toxins.
~modification in plant type - Tillering ,Branching, leaf character, Height : Decrease in cereal and increase in sugarcane.
~life cycle shorter & yield increase.
~ Increased size of grains / Fruit .
~ Variability with in a variety.
